Supported Living

For many people with learning disabilities, the provision of service has been synonymous with "care". Real Life Options believes that care is only one element of the package of support that people need. Our role is one of enabling people. Inclusion within society can only be meaningfully achieved when people are able to overcome the barriers between themselves and the everyday society in which we live. Many of these barriers are greater, for example, for a person who is both on the autistic spectrum and has challenging behaviours.

The key to breaking these barriers and achieving personal fulfillment is the way in which support is delivered, with the individual at the centre and not the support agency. Through employment, social relationships with people other than paid support staff or family, the tenure of their own home and an interesting lifestyle, people can achieve citizenship and an independent lifestyle.

Key principles of a supported living service:

People will be treated as individuals and their service will promote dignity, privacy, respect, independence, choice and rights.

RLO recognises everyone's right to exercise the maximum possible control over the service they receive. We will provide opportunities for people to be involved in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the service.

It is our role to ensure that each person is offered and can respond to choices, and we will maximise opportunities for financial autonomy. We recognise that people may need support to access independent advocacy to help them make informed choices.

Support Workers will acknowledge that they are visitors in another person?s home and act accordingly.

Gender, sexual orientation, age, ability, race, religion, culture and lifestyle will be acknowledged and respected.

RLO will provide support for carers, whether relatives, advocates or friends, and recognise the importance of their input and the rights of family members.

RLO recognises that people's needs and aspirations and support networks will change over time, and we will ensure that our service is able to respond sensitively and flexibly, accessing specialist provision when required.

RLO aims to increase everyone's opportunities for employment, leisure, education and volunteering, and we will facilitate inclusion within the social life of their local community.

RLO will make available and accessible information relating to someone's personal support package, whilst maintaining proper confidentiality with personal information.

RLO will ensure that resources are used flexibly and cost-effectively in response to individual assessed needs; and that for purchasers, we will offer value for money and give added value.
.
RLO will ensure that staff have the appropriate qualifications, experience and training to support the principles developed above.

Our service will be person centred, and viewed in the context of the person's whole life experience.
