RLO out in force to 'bowl an MP over'
People we support and Real Life Options staff turned out in force in Birmingham on Sunday 18th September, to support the Learning Disability Coalition’s campaign to engage with politicians at their party conferences.
Liberal Democrat Members of Parliament and the House of Lords were invited to The Leisure Box to take part in a ten pin bowling competition with people with learning disabilities.
The event was held in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, but there was also an important message. The idea was to gain politicians support for the extra resources for adult social care recommended by the recent Dilnot Commission enquiry.
It was also a chance for people with learning disabilities to tell their stories and to raise awareness amongst politicians of learning disability, and of the importance of social care.
Real Life Options’ West Midlands Divisional Manager, Deborah Gordon, who took part in the event, commented:
“It was certainly different to have the opportunity to bowl an MP over!” The Learning Disability Coalition later held similar events at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool and the Conservative Party conference in Manchester.
