Val - Senior Support Worker
I like to encourage people to work together to achieve their goals”
I’m a senior support worker working with people who live in their own home or with their family. I organise the monthly forums for people we support, which provides the space to share interests and worries, talk about future plans or just have a chat. I like to encourage people to work together to achieve goals and to arrange activities together.
I grow vegetables and quite a few of the people I support like to visit my allotment. I’m always happy to show off my latest crop, especially if they don’t mind doing a bit of weeding!
It's important to go the 'extra mile'. A couple of years ago we had a lot of snow and I couldn’t dig the car out. What was usually a 10-minute drive to work, turned into a one and a half hour trek! Some of the people we support were snowed in for eight days, but we managed to contact them all.
I feel most rewarded when people we support achieve their personal goals, become more independent and have fun along the way.
